| A Field Guide to the Stars and Planets (Field Guide to the Stars and Planets, 4th Ed) |
Jay M. Pasachoff |
Updated through 2010, this field guide for the new millennium is a must-have for
anyone interested in the night sky.
The fourth edition of this best-selling field guide has been completely revised and updated to include the latest information from leading astronomical sources. All the time-sensitive material is new and valid through 2010: solar eclipses, phases of the moon, positions of the planets, and more. Twenty-four Monthly Sky Maps, all newly revised and in color, show exactly what you'll see when facing north or south in the night sky. Fifty-two Atlas Charts, also revised and in color, cover the entire sky, including close-ups of areas of special interest such as the Pleiades and the Orion Nebula. The hundreds of thousands of devoted users of the previous editions of this guide have been eagerly awaiting this new volume so they can continue to enjoy their hobby in the coming decades. |
| Advanced Skywatching : The Backyard Astronomer's Guide to Starhopping and Exploring the Universe (Nature Company Guide) | Robert Burnham, Alan Dyer, Robert A. Garfinkle, Martin George, Jeff Kanipe, David Levy |
This is a great book for amateur astronomers, and space enthusiast. "The
Nature Company Guides" has taken a team of writers to produce a book with
current information about the universe that surrounds us. The book begins with a brief history and current national space accomplishments that have brought about tools to aid us in viewing and understanding outerspace. The book then goes on and presents tools that can aid the individual observer, such as binoculars, telescopes, CCD imaging, and much more. "Advanced Skywatching" takes a look at the sun and moon. Moon maps are presented to help the reader become familiar with different parts of the moon. Each planet is examined starting with the closest planet to the sun, Mercury, and moving outward. Other objects with in our solar system, such as Comets, asteroids, and meteors, are covered. The book moves on to the different types of stars: Double stars, variable stars, novas, and super novas. Some basic star maps are presented that focus on deep sky objects that lie with in the constellations. |
| Totality : Eclipses of the Sun | Mark Littmann, Ken Willcox, Fred Espenak |
The best feature of Totality is its wealth of biographical information
about eclipse chasers past and present. Throughout this century, every total
eclipse over land has been attended by scientists willing to travel great
distances, endure hostile climates--and risk complete failure because of
clouds--for a few minutes' view of the corona. This turbulent outer part of the
sun, best studied when the sun is obscured, draws observers across the globe to
this day.
Totality, like most eclipse guides produced in time for the 1999 eclipse, doesn't seem to know which readers it's addressing. Near the beginning, the reader is abjured not to let all the science bits "stand in the way of your enjoyment of the wild, wacky, and wonderful things people have thought and done about solar eclipses." What a strange sentiment in such a fascinating and adult marriage of science, history, biography, and sound technical advice. --Simon Ings, Amazon.co.uk -- |
| Companion to the Cosmos | John R. Gribbin, Geoffrey Kloske (Editor), Mary Gribbin | For the first time, a renowned science writer describes in detail the tremendous advances in astronomy over the last decade, with an extended essay that sums up the present state of knowledge about the universe, in a comprehensive guide to the cosmos. By the author of Schro+a5dinger's Cat. |

From Book News, Inc. , February 1, 1995 |
| Everybody's Comet : A Layman's Guide to Hale-Bopp | Alan Hale |
A reader from Bainbridge
Island, Washington The arrival of Hale-Bopp added a lot to my winter of 1997. I loved its ever-present image in the night sky. I'd open the front door and look slightly skyward. There it was, for months on end; a beautiful gift. I was sorry to see it go, so I went to books-in-print to see what I could actually find out about the comet. I found, to my delight, Mr. Hale's generous read. He lets us share his joy in having found the comet, and teaches a lot about basic astronomy in the process. Yes, Alan Hale's ship came in, and it was a beautiful comet. Fortunately, he brought it to life in a book, too. So, now that the comet is out of our realm of sight, grab a deck chair and read about it! You'll be glad you did. |
